Ringling College of Art & Design
Student Approach:
To visualize Einstein’s theories of time, Doug wanted to show the past, present, and future in a single frame. He filmed simple objects on a dark background illuminated by stark light, then overlaid and offset the footage so it could multiply on top of itself. He selected subject matter that was evocative of simple, fleeting human moments and memories.
About this Assignment:
This project is a non-traditional approach to a title sequence, where there are no pre-determined storyboards, and we don’t know what the outcome will be at the start of the project. Students are asked to develop a title sequence for a text about time, nature, or technology. We begin with open-ended visual experiments that resonate with the readings, and continually refine the experiments to enhance their impact and steer the piece towards an intended mood or meaning.
